Historic Church Restoration

Help restore the Sashabaw Century Historic Building

Our mission is to transform the historic church building into a vibrant community hub that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit. We aim to provide a welcoming space for physical activities such as yoga, educational support through after-school tutoring, and meeting areas for community groups. Additionally, we will offer opportunities for business owners to utilize the space and support spiritual growth through a variety of thoughtful programs and activites. By revitalizing this building, which has served our community for over 100 years, we strive to create a place where all members of the Clarkston area can come together, connect, and thrive.
Join the community effort.... To restore one of the oldest buildings in Independence Township/Clarkston!
You can suppoert this important project by joinning the Restoration Community Committee which meets monthlyon the second Tuesday at 6:30 PM at Sashabw Presbyterian Church (5300 Maybee Rd., across the street from the historic building.)  For more info text 248-310-1059.

Where We've Been.... The Historic Church was built in 1855. Creating a building where people could serve God through service to neighbors, families, the sick and displaced people was the culmination 14 years of prayers, hopes and dreams. In the 1970's the congregation moved across the street and the building served a number of different purposes such as Independence House, Light House North and as a set shop for the church's Youth Theatre.
Fall of 2016 brought vandalism. Break-ins resulted in damage to newly restored windows, the original chandelier, front doors and box pews. The break-ins also resulted in wild animals entering the building. Beginning in the spring of 2017 Sashabaw Presbyterian partnered with the newly formed Clarkston Schools “Clarkston Construction Technology” to restore the building! This provided the school district with a place to teach hands on skills such as wiring, construction, math, etc.

Where we are... Following COVID-19 it became increasingly evident that the school CCT program would be unable to continue working on the building.  In 2024 a group of people from the Sashabw Church and members of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints came together to form a community wide "Restoration Community Committee".  This committee is dedicated to rasing funds and providing labor when possible, so that the restoration of the building may continue

Where we are going... We envision a place where everyone belongs - a community space that renews hope in mind, body, and spirit and nurtures thr wellbeing of all.  Once restored this will be more than a building; it will be a living center for connection and growth.          A place where holistic healers make well, musicians practice and perform, creatives make and teach, entrepreneurs dream and develop, families celebrate, non-profits gather and there is a place for everyone. We envision a community space where we are “Restoring Hope: Mind, Body and Spirit” and supporting the well-being of all people.

If you would like to be a part of this restoration please email the church at [email protected].
The project is in need of...donations of building supplies, gift certificates to Lowes, ACE or other home building companies, landscaping supplies, dumpsters, large building equipment, lighting fixtures, people who have knowledge about restoration, and people to help plan and care for landscaping, and anything more you can think of!

If you would like to utilize the space once restoration is complete please contact us.  We are currently utlizing space in the current church (across the street).

Why Restore?

Pasint the exterior
Restoring windows & doors
Adding safety & accessibility

Goal: $350,000 for full restoration
Our Vision
Once restored, the church will be available to the whole community — just as it was when first built.

A nonprofit and civic meeting space
A community hub and work center

This building was built for the community — and we want it to be for the community once again.
